Hong Kong’s Densest Districts

With 67,000 people per square mile, Hong Kong is one of the most densely populated cities in the world.  According to Wikipedia’s Most Densely Populated City Propers Survey, Hong Kong ranks 26th in the world; it is made up of the following areas: Hong Kong Island, Lantau Islands, the Kowloon Peninsula, and the New Territories. Despite its reputation as a center of wealth and modernity in China, almost half of Hong Kong’s residents live in public housing.

The Five Most Populated Districts of Hong Kong as of 2011

1) Shan Tin of the New Territory                               630,273

  • Shan Tin of the New Territory has about 65% of its residence living in public housing

2) Kwun Tong of Kowloon                                            622,152

  • Kwun Tong of Kowloon has about 54% of its residence living in public housing

3) Eastern District of Hong Kong Island                   588,094

  •  Eastern District has the third highest median income of all of the 18 districts

4) Yuen Long of New Territory                                   578,529

  •   Yuen Long is an old market town; however, shopping malls have replaced old markets

5) Tuen Mun of New Territory                                   487,546

  •    Tuen Mun only had a population of 20,000 people in the 1960s

1) Kwun Tong of Kowloon                                            56,303

  •   Kwun Tong was the industrial base in Hong Kong but many factories have been torn down

2) Yau Tsim Nong of Kowloon                                     44,946

  •   A large shopping and tourist center of the Kowloon, the district has many retail and wholesale outlets

3) Wong Tai Sin of Kowloon                                         44,891

  •   85% of the population lives in public housing in this district

4) Sham Shui Po of Kowloon                                       40,175

  •   14 public housing high rises can be found in this district

5) Kowloon City of Kowloon                                        37,849

  •   Oi Man Estate is the largest public housing group in Kowloon City with 12 residential blocks
