Like the United States, China conducts a census every 10 years to determine its population of its 23 provinces, 5 autonomous zones, 4 municipalities and 2 special administrative zones. Listed below are figures of the Census and some analysis of the results.

Analysis: Five of the top ten populated provinces are located on the east coast of China, directly bordering the ocean. 405,037,193 people live in provinces that are bordering an eastern ocean in China or roughly 30% of China’s most populated provinces. Henan, Hunan, Anhui and Hubei are one or two provinces away from the eastern seaboard. The total of the populations in these provinces equals 276,445,539. So, of China’s top ten most populated provinces, 51% of their total population lies on the coast or one or two provinces away.

Analysis: The largest population documented in the 2010 Chinese Census of foreign nationals is of 184,088; this segment of foreign nationals is classified as Other (probably a mixture of ethnicities). Myanmar, Vietnam and North Korea directly border China.

Analysis: Three of the top ten most populated cities in China are in the Guangdong province: Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and Dongguan. Three of four of China’s municipalities are on the top ten list, being Shanghai, Beijing and Tianjin. The only municipality not appearing in the top ten is Chongqing. It should be noted that only the city proper population of Chongqing was included in the 2010 Chinese census.
